Terminology work
With years of hands-on experience using and expanding terminology databases for clients, I know how valuable a well-maintained corporate terminology base can be. It ensures clarity and consistency across all corporate communications.
Consistent corporate terminology – Your benefits
- Authors use the right language every time
- Consistency across brochures, manuals, websites, specifications, emails, and other text
- Fewer misunderstandings and translation errors
- Improved reader comprehension
Whether you already have a terminology database or need one created, I can support you. I can build and populate a new database, or update an existing database as writing projects progress, ensuring your database stays current and becomes a reliable resource across your company.
Building a terminology base – The steps
- Choose terminology software (from simply an Excel worksheet to SDL MultiTerm, MemoQ Termbase, TermWeb, TermWiki, Acrolinx, etc.)
- Define the database fields: definition, part of speech, subject area, translations, and more
- Extract terminology from existing documents
- Identify commonly used terms, differentiating them from similar ones
- Collaborate with engineers, service staff, sales teams, and production staff to ensure accuracy
- Write precise definitions with usage examples
- Translate terms into the required languages
